Planting and Sowing Vegetables - September 30, 2008 -
Not all crops are harvested at the same time; some crops are planted after others have been harvested so best use of the available ground is made. This is illustrated by the planting of a crop of broad beans planted in November to be harvested in June, after which a crop of leeks could then take their place. Those crops which grow quickly such as lettuce, spinach and radish are generally planted between the likes of broccoli which is harvested in March and those crops which must be planted later when the soil warms up around May time.
To make full use of the available space, quick growing crops can be sown at the same time as those who are slow growing such as parsnips and parsley, for these have a very slow germination period.
During the period of growth for crops such as winter lettuces, other seeds such as broad beans can be inserted between them in November. These in turn may be inter-cropped with early potatoes. The beans make a quicker start than the spuds, and growing vertical they will not interfere with the later developing potatoes and can grow along side quite successfully.
Experience will help and guide the gardener to make the best use of the land. Timing is one of the basic skills in successful crop cultivation and one, which will enable the greatest use of land resources.
Sowing
Seeds should be sown in firm but not hard soil. The beds should be prepared in fine weather when the soil is dry and crumbly. Begin by forking over the bed to a depth of about 3 in.(76mm) breaking up the soil to eliminate solid lumps; then tread the land over to make it firm. Rake the top inch of surface soil backwards and forwards until every particle is fine and the surface is level.
Being too liberal with the amount of seeds scattered when sowing, is probably one of the things that most gardeners are guilty of, especially when they first begin growing plants from seed. Bare in mind the eventual size of the vegetable, the space that it will require to grow and develop properly, and then you will have some idea of the necessity to be prudent. To illustrate this point consider for instance that in just oz. (7.5gm) of parsley, there are about 4,000 seeds; one seed can grow to 1ft. across so in fact oz. (7.5gm) of seed could sow a row of plants that would stretch 4,000 ft. long.
Keeping down the weeds is extremely important when growing vegetables; this is more easily achieved when the plants are grown in rows. It allows easy access between the plants when using a hoe, which is probably the best method to dislodge the weeds.

Caring for Water Garden Fish In Your Pond - September 29, 2008 -
You have space to spare in your garden. You brainstorm on what you could turn it to. Your final decision a man-made pond. Instead of having an aquarium inside the house, you opted to have a pond in your garden and fill it up with various kinds of water garden fish.
The most popular pond garden enthusiasts construct is the koi pond. This is a bit different from the water garden because there is a limited amount of plants that you can grow here. But the good thing about having a koi pond is that koi fish is one of the best water garden fish you can actually take care of.
We suggest that the koi pond you construct hold not less than 1000 gallons. The key is the bigger the koi pond, the better. You can even put a waterfall in your pond so that the sound of the rippling water can relax you. This can even delight the koi fish that you have living there.
Plan your koi pond specifically. Always remember that the mistake most gardeners do is that they build a pond that is so small, they end up not using it because there is a limitation on how much plant and fish they can put in it. So if you are building a koi pond, make sure that the area is 3 feet deep. You can even dig 4 to 5 inches to make it deeper.
The great thing about having a pond or a water garden is the variety of plants and fish you can have to fill up the ecosystem. Water gardens adjust moderately depending on the climate. Fish living in the pond will also adjust. As long as you meet the required depth such as 2 feet deep during moderate weather and 12 to 16 inches deeper during colder seasons, then you have nothing to worry about.
Before you begin, choose the proper location to situate your pond for the benefit of the fish. Typically, most ponds are positioned near the home. Choose an area where the pond will be okay all year round. For the fish, you can position it near wildlife. The surrounding birds and butterflies will be beneficial for your fish.
You can position your pond in an area where the run off from rain does not flow towards it. Because if it does, it may bring chemical, fertilizers and organic debris into the pond which will be harmful to your water garden fish.
Leave your pond where it receives four to six hours of sunlight. Fish in the pond reside in water lilies so they have shade anyway. If you are worried about water circulation, using a pump can do all the work for you. You can put water garden systems filter on the waterfall or on the fountain. Fishes in your pond will generally benefit a lot from this kind of pond.
If your fish seem to always be above the water’s surface and you wonder whether they are just hungry or you’re already paranoid that something is wrong, the answer depends on the kind of fish that you have. Generally, if fish do this, they need oxygen. Observe their mouths. If you see them gasping for air as they are above the surface, then they need oxygen as soon as possible.
If your fish swims above the water surface, then they may just be looking for food. Observe whether there are other fish or mosquitoes which get the food you give them.
Now that we are in the topic of fish, let’s move to what you should feed them. If you have a koi fish, then it is suggested that you feed them about 6 to 10 pellets in the morning and in the evening.
It also depends whether you have a large pond. If you do then they have other microcosms for your fish to much on. If that is the case, then you do not have to feed them.
Basic rule is to not overfeed your fish. When you feed your pets, they should come above the water’s surface and eat up what you give them in a minute and so. It is advised that you have hungry fish than a fish that is always full.
Another concern is when your fish are always swimming around your pump or your filter. Of course, you will wonder whether they are getting enough oxygen. Observe them closely. If they are not on the water’s surface and their mouths are not gasping for air, then they are okay.
The thing about koi fish is that they are playful and they like to hide in different places in your pond. It can be between the water lilies or the water garden filter pump. This only means that you should go to your pet store and shop for a couple of toys for your koi fish.

Creating A Balcony Garden Oasis - September 28, 2008 -
Having a garden is one of the highlights of summer for many people but not everyone has a yard in which to plant flowers. Luckily, there are a few ways that even apartment dwellers can enjoy gardening.
If you are fortunate enough to have a balcony or deck off your main living area, you can use containers to turn it into a mini garden. Today, you can purchase containers that hang right on the railing without any invasive installation and large pots can be used on the decking. If you have a roof above your balcony, you may even be able to install hanging plants. Just be sure that you review the rules of your apartment complex before you add anything to your outdoor area.
When choosing flowers or plants for your outdoor area, you want to be sure to buy plants that will thrive in that environment. If your apartment balcony is shady then you want to get plants that like the shade. If it has blazing sun all day, buy ones that can take the hot sun, or be sure to move them into the shade during the noon heat if they specify that they are for partial shade. Buying annuals is probably a best bet as they will flower all season and you wont have to deal with them in the winter.
When selecting your containers, be sure to get ones that have good drainage. You may even want to add some small rocks on the bottom to provide additional places for water to go. If you will be putting the containers on your decking, be sure to buy saucers for them so the water doesnt seep onto the deck and stain it - if you dont you might find yourself forfeiting your security deposit or re-staining the deck when you move out. Before drilling holes for hanging plants, be sure to check with your landlord or apartment caretaker.
Be sure to use a good potting soil for your plants and water thoroughly. Plants in containers can dry out rapidly and you may have to water them every day. Be sure that you dont over water, you want the soil to be moist with no standing water. Container plants do well when fertilized about once a month with a general fertilizer or one made specifically for your type of plant.
In addition to planting flowers outdoors, you can also enhance your balcony area with interesting potted palms and other tree like plants that can be moved into the apartment when cold weather comes and enjoyed all winter long. When arranging the plants, be sure to use pots and plants of varying heights - all plants of the same height will look boring, but if you put together containers of different sizes and heights in groups this will add a lot of interest.
Be sure to check your plants every day and pinch off any dead flowers and leaves to keep your balcony garden oasis vibrant and fresh.

How to Get Beautiful Colorful Blooms for Your Plants, Trees and Shrubs - September 28, 2008 -
Beautiful flowering blooms for your plants.
These numbers analyze the amount of: Nitrogen, Potash and Phosphate. These nutrients are what all plants, trees, flowers and shrubs need. You may think I am a bit fanatical but I consider all plants as people. If you do not take in the proper nutrients your mind and body will start to deteriorate fast.
Nitrogen - Is the first number on the product and referred to by the symbol N. This is a naturally occurring element in our air. It is needed by plants to produce green healthy growth. A higher number on the bag means MORE nitrogen. If your plant, shrub or tree is turning a yellowish color, it probably needs nitrogen. Ok this is easy yellow leaves mean you need Nitrogen in your soil.
Phosphate - The second number and referred to by the symbol P. Plants need phosphate to stimulate healthy root development for flowering and to help in the prevention of disease and stress. The phosphate process combines phosphate rock with sulphur and produces phosphoric solution. Phosphate helps in root stimulation and flowering of plants. When planting flowering trees, or shrubs be sure to use a fertilizer with a HIGH phosphate number. If you are having problems making your plants bloom then be sure to purchase a fertilizer with a high phosphate content. Remember phosphate and phosphorus are basically the same. No blooms or flowers means your soil needs more phosphate.
Potash - Or sometimes referred to as potassium. This is usually the last number and is referred to by the symbol K. This contains minerals and potassium which are mined from naturally occurring ORE bodies. All plants need this nutrient potash regulates water balance, enzyme activity, starch and protein synthesis and nitrogen uptake. If your plants look droopy, smallish or not growing to its expected height means you need more potash.
Why do your plants need these nutrients? Because in your area these nutrients may be missing from your soil and they are needed for continuous healthy growth.
If you live in the lower elevations of the southwest, your soil is probably missing the above minerals needed for growing plants, trees, or shrubs.
A good all purpose fertilizer will usually have numbers with 16-8-8 printed across the product. This type of fertilizer no matter what brand name will have all the nutrients needed for a healthly plant.
Compost is the material resulting from composting, which is the natural process of decomposition of organic waste that yields manure or compost, which is very rich in nutrients. Also called humus, is a soil conditioner and a very good fertilizer.
A word of caution on buying fertilizer. Do NOT confuse lawn fertilizer with plant and tree fertilizer.
The biggest tip of all…be sure that you read the instructions on each and every bag.

Curved Garden Benches - September 28, 2008 -
Garden benches that are curved at the back and have a back rest are the ones known as curved garden benches. They are not only very comfortable and stylish, but are also highly attractive. Their designs usually depend on the materials being used in their manufacturing. They usually enhance the setting of the gardens, and the best part about them is that they can be left out in open all year through.
Most of the curved garden benches are made of metals as they are easily moulded into various shapes as compared to stone and other such hard materials. These metals include aluminium, wrought iron and brass among others. They can be placed anywhere in the garden as they not only provide comfortable seating options, but also look extremely beautiful in well maintained gardens. These can be placed next to ponds or in small hide- away place in ones garden. These curved garden benches help in adding to the beauty of the gardens because of their exquisite designs, shapes and sizes.
As a result of the materials used in the making of such curved garden benches, they require very little maintenance and are very easy to clean. Curved garden benches also last for very long because of the metals that go into their making. These metals make them weather resistant and also very durable and strong so that they can withstand large amounts of pressure.
The prices of curved garden benches depend on the kind of metal or other materials that are used for its making. They are slightly cheaper if they are made of aluminium or any other such material, but on being made with stone or concrete, the prices rise considerably. Prices also depend on the amount of handwork that goes into the making of one such curved bench. Benches with a lot of carvings are usually more expensive. Prices can range from $75-$250.

Growing Nostalgic "Old Roses" In Your Garden - September 28, 2008 -
“Old Roses” Convey Time Honored Tradition
In the 18th Century, the practice of tending rose bushes was popular and a handy source for young men to offer as gifts during courtship. These roses were not only beautiful to admire and richly fragrant but also highly symbolic of an unwritten and often unspoken language between admirers. In ancient times, some even believed that these roses contained medicinal properties. Most of these “old roses” came from hardy shrubs that required moderate tending. Today’s “old rose” varieties are also for the most part hardy but require consistent attention before you’ll achieve a seasoned gardener’s level of perfection.
The category of “old roses” is from a hardy stock of rose bushes and climbers that were popular in the Victorian age. Most of these Victorian-age roses were imported from varieties that were first grown in Greece and Persia during the 15th Century. These aromatic roses are still highly popular in today’s gardens since they grow well in several zones and don’t require the same highly detailed attention as many hybrid roses.
To select an “old rose” for your garden, begin by examining your garden area and figuring out what roses work in that area. For instance, some “old roses” bushes work best as hedges while others prefer to crawl low as bed covers. Many climbers first look like small bushes but climb well up patios, sides of homes, and fences. Some other factors to think about when picking and arranging “old roses” are drainage, sunlight, shading, and insects. Most “old roses” must be watered very frequently on a daily basis. Sunlight is needed for about five hours a day for most “old rose” shrubs

Aspen Trees - September 23, 2008 -
Aspen trees are considered to be one of the largest organisms in the world and yet maintain the identity of being slender and delicate. Appreciating the splendor of aspen can happen almost anywhere due to its ability to share its natural beauty in many forms.
When one thinks of aspen they generally imagine forest groves in the Rocky or Appalachian Mountains, but in reality aspen trees grow all over the globe. They can be found in Europe, Asia and Japan. Aspen trees survive only within specific environments; cool regions with cool summers and cold winters. That is why they are only found within 5,000 feet-12,000 feet above sea level. On rare occasions they have been seen as low as 1,500 feet but rarely survive due to the mild winters. Only grown in the Northern Hemisphere, their northern limits are determined by its intolerance to permafrost and they can extend south only at the high altitudes.
In western North America, Quaking Aspens grow only in portions of the Rocky Mountain Range (which extends from Canada to Mexico). At maturity, this medium-size deciduous tree usually reaches heights of 66 feet-82 feet with a trunk size of 6 inches-24 inches. The leaves are generally round (1 inch-1 inches in diameter) and 1 inch-2 inches long with small irregular rounded teeth. They are connected with strong flattened stems, which enable the leaves to twist and flutter in the slightest breezes originating the meaning of its name.
To propagate, aspen trees have two options; they can generate from seeds or clone from root suckers. The seeds are released in capsules that are attached to cottony fluff produced by mature trees in the spring. Once the seed takes root and produces a tree the roots stretches out to create a new sapling, creating a colony. Every sapling has the same genetic code as the original seed so the whole colony ends up being clone trees. New stems in the colony may appear 9 feet-12 feet from the parent tree. Each tree only lives for 40-150 years above ground, but the root system of the colony is long-lived, in some cases for many thousands of years, sending up new trees as the older trees die off above the ground. One such colony in Utah is claimed to be 80,000 years old, making it possibly the oldest living colony in the world. Some aspen colonies become very large with time, spreading about three feet per year, eventually covering many hectares. They are able to survive intense forest fires as the roots are far below the heat of the fire, with new sprouts growing after the fire is out.
The wood of the aspen is white, and soft, but fairly strong, and has very low flammability. It has a number of uses, notably for making matches, where its low flammability makes it safer to use and easy to blow out compared to other woods. Shredded aspen wood is also a popular animal bedding, as it lack the phenols (natural chemicals) associated with pine and juniper, which are thought to cause respiratory ailments in some animals. Once a tree dies it can also be kiln dried and used in making furniture. Real aspen rustic log furniture adds a great deal of character to many American households as it adds environmentally friendly components to everyday life. Aspen is the preferred log of many craftsmen as each piece has unique character, creates a rustic style and it has an outstanding resilience to bug infestation.

History Of The Pawpaw Tree - September 23, 2008 -
Pawpaw trees were discovered in 1541 by the Spanish explorer, Hernando Desoto, on an excursion into the Mississippi Valley, and he sent samples of this plant back to Europe.
William Bartram in 1776 stated in his botanical book, Travels, that he found pawpaw trees growing on the Alatamaha River in Georgia and in east Florida, which he described as, Annona incarna, the name later was updated by modern taxonomists. The fruit the size of a small cucumber containing a yellow pulp of the consistence of a hard custard, and a very delicious, wholesome food.
This fruit is agreeably flavored and considered to be the largest native fruit of North America. The pawpaw trees are said to be endangered or threatened in the states of New York and New Jersey, in the forests where it grows naturally.
The pawpaw tree grows across most of the eastern United States as a native tree. Mature pawpaw trees produce fruits 2″ wide by 10″ long, looking and tasting very much like a banana. The fruit is liked immensely by most people and may be purchased at many outdoor markets in West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, etc. The pawpaw pulp has the consistency of creamy custard and may be eaten raw, baked, or used as a pie filling. The trees grow about 15′ tall and have been known to produce as much as 60 pounds of pawpaws per tree. Some individual pawpaws weigh up to a pound each. Zones 5-10
Much interest has been recently directed towards research and development of improved varieties of the pawpaw at Universities in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio. The large fruit is not well known in much of the United States, but its flavor and exotic shape make it a candidate for the expansive, potential of specialty fruit markets in the future. Taste it once fresh and you will feel compelled to have some of these pawpaw trees growing in your personal fruit orchard.
One of the great horticultural mysteries of the world is: why have most paw paw trees, that were plentiful throughout early U.S. forests, virtually disappeared from their natural habitat today? That answer may lie within the research results (Peterson 1991), that showed that the paw paw is sensitive to ultraviolet light, thus, paw paw seedlings may not grow back after the forests have been harvested, and there are very few virgin forests left in the United States. Paw paws can be found growing there abundantly, but once the forests are clean-cut, the paw paw will not usually become re-established.
These experiments must be clearly remembered, when you order your paw paw trees. They must be planted under partial shade of other trees, however, you may plant your pawpaw trees in the open, if the trees are grown under shade cloth for a couple of seasons. The tree will lose its sensitivity to full sunlight once it has become established and the shade cloth can be discarded.
Some gardeners wish to plant their pawpaw trees in pots for a couple of years under shady conditions, but this is not necessary if the above guidelines are followed. Since paw paw trees are tap rooted, growth will be slow during the first year, but after that, very rapid growth occurs afterwards.
Paw paw leaves are large and that large leaf surface generally indicates a need for large amounts of soil moisture, and therefore, generally, paw paws are found in their greatest numbers near river flood plains. Leaves or other organic composted materials are very beneficial to paw paws.
The skin of paw paws is thin and edible and can vary in color from a light green to a golden yellow. Most people prefer to eat the pawpaw fruit after it becomes soft to the touch. The custard- like pulp tastes like banana and varies in color from white to deep orange. The seed are few and large, thus, pawpaws are easy to eat raw.
Most paw paws are sold at roadside markets, because the shelf life is short. Commercially, the paw paw is important in juices, pies, cakes, custards, ice cream and other processed products.
The pawpaw tree was voted by Better Homes and Gardens, in the year 2000, as the landscape tree of the year. The pawpaw and the pawpaw tree are loaded with beneficial health extracts. The bark contains fluids that demonstrate anti-tumor properties and have been used over the years to fight scarlet fever and red skin rashes. These extracts from pawpaw trees are highly useful as an organic insect killer (pesticide).
Pawpaw fruits are rich in minerals such as magnesium, copper, zinc, iron, manganese, potassium, and phosphorus. The fruit also contains abundant concentrations of Vitamin C, proteins, and their derivative amino acids.
There are a number of grafted cultivars of paw paw but their range of adaptation is very narrow, and many cultivars that produce heavy crops of large fruit in Kentucky, Indiana or West Virginia do not perform satisfactorily in Georgia, Florida, Carolina or Alabama. Consider buying improved seedling paw paw trees, which appear to be more adaptable universally. Try some of these trees in your orchard for a real tasty treat.

Abatement and Coping with Challenges in the Environment - September 22, 2008 -
So often we find problems with our eco-system where something is out of wack and we attempt to alleviate the problem thru abatement. Generally such plans if well thought out make sense, however sometimes the laws of unintended consequences come forth and a worse problem is created you see?
This further challenges us in our Abatement Programs and plans and it is not easy coping with such complex problems and challenges in the Environment. If you use Mosquito abatement and the bats eat the poisoned mosquitoes then the bats can get sick and die and then they do not eat all the other bugs so then you have to use more pesticides which can be bad for the produce and the run off from the fields, orchards, vineyards and such gets into the streams, rivers and lakes.
This causes issues with fish too. It is all part of the same and one over kill or screw can have unintended consequences. Luckily we are learning from all this but not fast enough?
All abatement plans need to be well thought out. If we fail to kill the vector disease carrying mosquitoes we may find ourselves with dead livestock and humans with West Nile Virus, Bird Flu or other very serious issues. So, we must do what we have to do and do it well. But we also think several chess moves ahead. Consider this in 2006.

Abatement and Consistency Philosophy
So often our abatement policies are inconsistent and not because circumstances are much different, but because the users of the abatement products and chemicals just do not understand chemistry or how the chemicals are able to do their job.If a chemical is to be used on an area, which needs to be abated it must be used in the right ratios of course...
