Energy Efficient Heating - Learn How to Cut Your Energy Bill During the Winter - August 31, 2008 -
In terms of energy efficiency, space heaters are great for adding supplemental heat when the main heating source is inadequate or when central heating may be too costly to install or to operate.
In fact, the use of a space heater may even be less expensive to operate if it is only used to heat a small room or area, or to boost the temperature of rooms used by individuals sensitive to cold. In addition, space heaters do not lose any energy through ducts or combustion, so they are considered to be almost 100% efficient. Almost all of the warmth generated by a space heater will radiate into a room.
For industrial areas such as warehouses and workspaces, fueled heaters such as kerosene and propane heaters are great because they use little to no electricity. However, these cannot be used in areas without adequate ventilation, and they can carry some safety risks.
For home use, electric space heaters are more suitable. Most electric space heaters use convection to heat a room. When used as a supplemental heat source in combination with an existing central heating system, portable electric space heaters can be very affordable. As well, some electric heaters also rely on radiant heating, meaning they emit infrared heat in the same way the sun warms the earth. Only the objects around the heater are warmed, and for this reason, the use of these heaters can be very energy efficient, as an infrared heater immediately transfers heat to occupants and not the entire room or area. These heaters can also heat up a room or area much faster, as heat is easily directed to the space being heated in a precise beam. Lastly, consider the use of an oil-filled radiator heater. Like electric space heaters, oil-filled heaters are ideal when your central heating system is not sufficient. These are safe, silent, and energy efficient because they automatically maintain optimal room temperature.
Therefore, with all of the above heating choices available, you can still save money on your energy bill and keep your home or living space comfortable. For additional money savings, follow these tips as well:
1. Choose a heater with a timer or that is thermostatically controlled. These heaters can avoid the energy waste of overheating a room.
2. Purchase a heater of the proper size for the room or area you wish to heat. Do not choose an oversized heater, and pay attention to watts. With a 10/1 ratio of watts to square feet heated, a 1500 watt space heater (120 volts) will heat an insulated area of 150 square feet, and a garage heater rated at 5,000 watts should heat an area over 400 square feet.
3. Try not to leave your space heater on the high setting, and turn the heater off when you are away. Space heaters can consume large amounts of energy if left on continuously.
4. Keep your doors and windows closed in order to minimize heat loss and for optimal heating effectiveness. Frequent switching a heater on and off and adjusting the thermostat will also increase energy usage.

Auto Insurance & The Internet - A Marriage Made In Heaven! - August 31, 2008 -
The internet is all about information, and, more critically, the ability to compare facts, data and information from several different sources quickly and efficiently.
Arguably, as a direct result of this simple fact, nobody has felt the effects of a potential customers ability to find, check and compare such data than companies trying to sell services (as opposed to products) online.
Unlike a physical product, a service is not tangible, you cannot pick it up, feel it, or touch it. Thus, a service provider needs to supply the maximum amount of information, because the more information the potential customer has, the more confident he is likely to be when making the buying decision.
What better way to do this than via the worldwide web?
A perfect example of this is the automobile or car insurance marketplace. In the past, if you wanted to get the most competitive quotation for your car insurance, you had to shop around by trudging from one insurance broker or companys office to another, or by getting on the telephone to do the same thing.
The problem with this was that it was often difficult, if not impossible to know whether you were truly comparing like with like. There were (and, to a large extent, still are) so many potential variations from one companys policy to another that it was almost impossible to know whether the two policies that you were comparing really did offer identical levels of protection and benefits.
This was not always a bad thing. For example, all car insurance companies tend to load the premium (i.e. charge extra) for young drivers to be included on a policy, which can be bad news for parents using the family car to teach their son or daughter to drive. However, Company A may define a young driver as someone below the age of 18, whereas Company B will use a threshold of 21 years of age.
If your child was 19, the chances are that Company A will be the best bet in these circumstances.
In other words in the old days, it was absolutely necessary to read the small print, to avoid ending up with a automobile insurance policy that really did not meet your requirements, although it appeared at first as if it did.
Coming right back up to the present day, whilst the small print is still extremely important, the internet has effectively ensured that it is no longer so small! It is now possible to make meaningful and accurate comparisons of exactly what two companies are offering with their car insurance policy at the touch of a button.
You are still shopping around but you are doing it at our own speed, from the comfort of your own home.
In this way, the internet has made finding the best car insurance a far less stressful business than it was in the past, and has also guaranteed that the policy you buy is absolutely the most suitable for your own circumstances.

Easy Lawn Care - August 31, 2008 -
One of the most important outside chores is lawn care. It is almost considered an American pastime during the summertime. A trim, neat, and attractive lawn can give you a great sense of pride and ownership in your home. It is also less expensive to do the work yourself and you may find that it gives you a great deal of pride and satisfaction in realizing that even you can make your lawn beautiful. It is important that you keep several things in mind, however, to ensure that you stay safe and keep your lawn looking neat and beautiful all year long. Learning some lawn care basics can help you to accomplish the lawn that you want and deserve.
Before you begin taking care of your lawn, you first want to clear the lawn of anything that may cause you problems. This includes raking leaves, removing any debris, garbage, or unwanted brush, and ridding your yard of any dips or valleys. To rid any little valleys that may be in your lawn, all you have to do is use topsoil to fill the holes and then plant grass seed. A bump in an area that is sodded can be remedied by cutting across the bump in an X pattern and peeling it back for easy soil removal. Then you simply put the sod back. By clearing your lawn and leveling it, you will find that it makes mowing the lawn much easier and it will make your lawn look much more neat and beautiful.
Grass needs to be mowed on a regular basis during the growing season. How regular depends upon how quickly your type of grass grows and your climate, but you may need to mow your lawn once a week or even every two weeks. You need to adjust your lawnmower blades to ensure that no more than 1/3 of the grass’ height is cut. This will help to keep the grass healthy and green. If you cut the grass too short, it becomes more susceptible to disease, which can harm your entire lawn.
Soil compaction is a problem that you want to watch for in your lawn care. Your soil can become hard under the grass after a period of time and this can make it very difficult for your grass to get proper moisture and can cause root problems. By aerating your lawn, you can make it easier for your soil to get air and moisture. Aerating the soil is done in one of two different ways. One includes simply punching holes in the soil and the other is called plugging. Plugging is when small plugs of soil around the size of a pencil are removed from the ground. Each of these methods allows water to get to the soil much better and it provides a place for helpful insects and bugs to thrive. You should aerate your lawn about once a year or so. If an aerator is not in your budget, they are available for rent.
Adding fertilizer to your lawn can help it to grow, too. Fertilizer is not a necessity, but it will give your lawn the right additives to enable it to become greener, thicker, and even more beautiful. You can apply it too liberally, though, and this can cause your lawn to die, so it is essential to monitor how much fertilizer you use. Fertilizer comes in tow different forms - liquid and granular. The granular form is dry and after you apply it, you will need to water your lawn. This form is easily spread over the lawn using a hand spreader or mechanical spreader. This kind of fertilizer lasts anywhere from two to three months. A liquid fertilizer is a fast-acting fertilizer that needs to be applied about every two weeks. It can be applied using a watering can or a hose-end sprayer, whichever you prefer.
Your lawn may not be healthy for children for several days after you apply the fertilizer, so keep that in mind. Give the fertilizer enough time to completely absorb into the surface before you allow your family to frolic on the grass. Many peoples lawns do not necessarily need fertilizer to have a beautiful lawn, but if your lawn does, then take the proper precautions.

The 7 Cornerstones Of Leadership - August 31, 2008 -
We hear so much these days about leadership, especially when things go wrong. The faults of so-called leaders are really highlighted when they are found wanting be they corporate executives, presidents, spiritual leaders, coaches, or parents.
What qualities do true leaders posses? Following exhaustive study from the best M.BA Business Schools (Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, A.G.SM), they are:
1. Clarity of Vision
Leaders are all future oriented thinkers. They ask, what would my organization look like 5 years from today? Once they have this clarity in detail, they boldly act so as to go where they have never gone before.
2. Courage
Leaders roll up their sleeves and dive in. Its one thing to have a set of objectives, another to have the courage to execute - hence the term executive. Leaders have the same fears and doubts as anyone else. The difference is that their courage is so powerful that it easily extinguishes the negative voices within. They take action.
3. Integrity
Integrity is the indispensable quality of leadership. Leaders deliver on their promises. 24 /7. Yet some people in positions of leadership operate as if their integrity is situational. In other words, they act honestly depending on the situation at hand. No, no. Integrity is like being pregnant. Either you are or you are not. This is especially the case in business, whereby goods and services are primarily bought not so much on what they can deliver, but on truth and honesty from the part of those doing the delivering.
4. Responsibility
True leaders never complain about how things turn out. You will never hear them make excuses. U.S. president Harry S. Truman had a sign with this inscription on his desk the buck stops here. This was meant to indicate that he didn’t ‘pass the buck’ to anyone else but accepted personal responsibility for the way the country was governed.
5. Commitment
True leaders are fully committed to the tasks required to succeed. You will find that they are passionate about the results they aim at. They never attempt anything that their heart isn’t into. Passion is the fuel that allows leaders to push forward, up, over, and around any obstacles along the way.
6. Focus
Leaders concentrate their energies, strengths and skills that make the greatest positive difference to the situation at hand. They are very mindful of that most valuable of resources, time, and as such set clear priorities on the best use of it. They are aware of their many weaknesses, which they delegate, and hone in on a handful of strengths that bring the greatest value to the organization.
7. Excellence
Good enough is never near enough for leaders. They are very meticulous about detail, as they have a philosophy where everything matters. Everything. Achieving excellence is not that difficult, since the majority settles at mediocrity. Thus leaders always go that extra mile. They also know that in order to get extraordinary performance form their people, they themselves must be extraordinary. There is no other way to do this than to stand out from the pack through an excellence mentality.
If you lack even one of the qualities listed, then you have yet to reach leadership status.
Heres the good news. Leaders are never born. They are made. The only way to acquire any one of these 7 pillars for leadership is to begin to practice it. In time, you will become a true leader.

Put In The Work And You Will Reap The Rewards - August 31, 2008 -
I had a conversation with someone the other day that drove home a point I wanted to share with you. The person was telling me how much she hates new years because she comes up with the same resolutions all the time and each year she is reminded of the fact that she did not accomplish what she wanted. Two things come to mind when I hear this. 1. The resolutions are not really that important to the person. They could be old resolutions that the person believes she should accomplish but they are really not in her heart. 2. The person either does not want to commit to the work involved in accomplishing her goals and/or she does not know how to do it.
Have you ever known people who are always talking about what they are going to do but they never do it? I think the reason they never do it is because it is hard. Most of the things in life that are worth having take work and commitment and discipline. In fact, I can’t think of anything that doesn’t. If you want a fulfilling job where you feel like you are contributing the best of yourself and you have the potential for increasing levels of success, you have to work at it every day. You have to make efficient use of your time, be productive, seek out new opportunities, stay current on trends and information in your field, and contribute positively to your company or your business on a daily basis. This does not mean that you have to work 100 hours a week; however, it does mean that when you do work, it must be high quality. If you don’t, rest assured someone else will. So, if you want a better job, a more prestigious title, or a grander paycheck, put it in the work. Complaining that someone else got a promotion when you think it should have been you, comparing your work to someone else’s, and feeling as though you are entitled to something just because you graduated from a great school is not going to get you where you want to go. The only things that will do that are an unparalleled work ethic, a positive attitude, and an ability to see yourself in the bigger picture.
If it is a better relationship you seek, look at what you are contributing and see what you can do to make it better. We cannot change other people and one of the most frustrating things about relationships is we cannot control how someone else feels, responds to us, or operates in a relationship. All you can do is show up each day with the very best of who you are. If you dwell on what is not working, it will continue to get worse. If you continue to bring up the shortcomings of your partner, you will find them manifesting themselves in every possible avenue. Remember that love is not just an ethereal idea, it is a verb and in order to feel love and to be loved you have to love in return. Love does not just happen and if you want real love in your life, you have to be willing to open up, take responsibility for your role in every relationship you have, and communicate what you need. Do not assume your friend, partner, colleague, etc. knows how you feel or what you want. Communicate and put in the work and you will have deeper and more meaningful relationships in every area of your life.
There is room for so much good in your life. Do the work and you will reap the rewards!

Poinsettias Christmas Cactus - August 31, 2008 -
If you are looking for a natural way to decorate your home, you may want to try a Christmas cactus or other plant. Poinsettias are the most popular plant that you see at Christmas time. It makes an excellent Christmas gift for almost anyone that you purchase a gift for and it comes in a wide variety of colors, including yellow, salmon, red, pink, or even a combination of these colors. The more light the cactus gets, the more flowers the cactus will have. A sunny place inside your home is its ideal spot during the winter, but in the summertime you want to place it in a shadier location. Increase the time that your plant spends in the sun each day so that you can adapt it to live outdoors. Between May and September it is best to put your Christmas cactus in the shade.
Well-drained soil is recommended for your Christmas cactus. Packaged potting soil is the best option to ensure that it is exactly the right composition for your cactus. If it is warmer outside, then your Christmas cactus will need more water. Water it when the top layer of soil is dry to the touch and keep the pot continually moist. By keeping it moist, you will help to prevent it wilting.
If your cactus has blooms all over it, then it does not need water. Leave it without water for four or five weeks after it blooms and then repot it and add fresh new soil. The plant will have new growths by the spring and then it will need some fertilizer. Give it some liquid fertilizer every two to three weeks to help it grow.
To help the plant to grow taller and wider, prune it after it blooms. Simply by using your fingers or a sharp knife, you can pinch the stem and remove the sections of each bloom. Root these sections that you removed to help make new plants. If your Christmas cactus has a long and uninterrupted time in a dark spot, then it will bloom more voraciously. You should let it be in darkness from the beginning of October until the start of the holiday season and then you will have lots of flowers.
Here is a handy guide for taking care of your Christmas cactus
During the month of January, your plant will be full of blooms. February to March you may want to reduce watering. From April to May, you only want to water the plant when the top layer of soil is dry. June to August is when you want to protect your plant by placing it in a shady location. In September and October, your plant will need less light and will enjoy being in a dark, dry, cool place. November and December are the best months for your Christmas cactus to bloom. You will enjoy this Christmas cactus year around.

Rosa Glauca (Rubrifolia) - August 31, 2008 -
A Rose with Handsome Foliage that Grows Well in the Shade.
From the mountains of central and southern Europe comes an exceptional rose - the Rosa glauca, also known as rubrifolia. Introduced into England around 1830, this species rose is known for its unique and stunning foliage and small rosehips that remain through the winter–unlike most roses, which are known only for their blooms. The foliage is dusty mauve in the sun and grayish mauve in the shade - especially beautiful in cut arrangements. And it’s almost thornless too! With mauve canes to enhance to the beauty of this shrub rose, you can add a unique interest to your garden, especially in winter.
Rosa glauca’s beautiful blooms are a match with the foliage. The single, one-inch, star-shaped blossoms are dark pink with white centers and gold stamens in early summer. They are followed by small oval, orange-red hips in autumn.
This upright shrub arches when its branches become loaded with flowers and can be used almost anywhere on your landscape. Its branches can reach up to ten feet tall - let them arch or take advantage of the long stems and train it as a climbing rose.
Rosa glauca will bloom on both old and new wood, so prune only when it has finished flowering for the season. This is a beautiful, easy to care for shrub that will bring you joy all year long, whether outdoors or as part of an intriguing flower arrangement.
Shade-tolerant shrubs with foliage in hues of grey are very scarce indeed, as are shade tolerant shrubs that bloom pink in the summer. Rosa glauca has not only the foliage color, but also a graceful habit that adds informal charm to the shade garden.
