This article explores the importance of design in the Internet world. A recent blog post on Signal vs Noise pointed out the article at Reuters which said that a website has around 1/20th of a second to make an impression that will stay with the user for the rest of their visit and all other visits.
You should take this on board. What impression does your website make on people? Have you ever asked your clients/customers what they think of your site? What was their first impressions of the site and why? Great content, functionality and added value are all huge aspects of Internet Development, but your site design can and will turn people away within a second or less. You need to address this issue.
2. The Business implications
The real business issue you need to consider here is your reputation. Your website is just like your receptionist: it can be the first thing that a client or user sees of your company. Can you afford to make a bad impression. Bad design is like having a rude receptionist.
You can lose customers and clients by having a badly designed website. That’s the business issue.
3. How can you change it
So the next question is, how?
After having read this article it got me thinking about how you can solve this problem, anything people can do to make their first impression count.
Gitte Lindgaard, a psychology professor at Carleton University in Ottawa said:
“When we looked at the Web sites that we tested, there is really nothing there that tells us what leads to dislike or to like.”
So, there are no principles that we can put here that can quickly change your sites design to make a better impression. The only advice I can give is to hire a professional design agency. Whilst this is still no guarantee of a design that makes a great impression, it is what they are hired to do: they are the experts.
However there are some basic principles of design though that aid a good site design (though as we already know, they don’t MAKE a great design):
* No unnecessary animated GIFs like ‘under construction’ logos for pages
* No blinking text
* No background music
* No clashing colours or text on colours where the constrast that results is so bad that the text is unreadable.
* Use of appropriate, readable fonts. For instance Arial or Verdana. Text should not be too small or too big. Adjustable text.
* Generally the use of a page background is discouraged unless it’s very subtle or aids the content. A bad example would be here.
* Different pages have different design: use consistent design.
I could go on and on and on I’m sure. There are many bad examples of websites on the net and you don’t have to look too hard to find them. However your site does not have to be one of them.
If you’re going to do it, do it properly.

Replanting Your Christmas Tree - June 30, 2008 -
If you are in the market for a beautiful evergreen to be added to your landscape, Christmas is a perfect time to begin shopping. While most Christmas shoppers purchase a Christmas tree that has already been chopped at the bottom, there are several nurseries that offer live Christmas trees with the roots still intact.
This means you can fill a space in your landscape with the Christmas tree that you enjoyed all season long. This is also a great way to recycle your Christmas tree instead of simply throwing away one of natures precious resources.
The most important factor in finding a Christmas tree to replant is to find a tree that will transplant well after the holidays. Of course, the success of replanting a Christmas tree truly lies in the hands of the nursery where you receive the evergreen tree, as it is essential that they take extreme care of the roots by immediately placing them in burlap once the Christmas tree is removed from the ground.
A good nursery will also point you in the direction of a healthy Christmas tree and will point out which evergreens do best in replant situations. Most nurseries will suggest a pine, spruce or fir, all hardy varieties of the evergreen.
Keep in mind that when you are purchasing a replant Christmas tree, it will be more expensive than a tree that you will purchase just for the holiday season. While trees can cost anywhere from $30-$100 to purchase already chopped, a tree with roots intact may cost between $50-$200.
Although you might want to save money, it really is better to spend a little extra money and get a healthy, sturdy tree with long branches and a large root ball so that you will have transplant success.
Another important piece of advice regarding the replanting of your Christmas tree is to give the tree a 3-4 day transitional period in between the outdoors and indoors. This goes for both bringing the Christmas tree home as well as returning it to the outdoors. Otherwise your tree may suffer from shock because of the drastic difference in temperature.
It is essential whether the tree is indoors or outdoors to keep it covered with more than the burlap sack for moisture and protection. You may want to try straw, a blanket, saw dust, or even old towels or newspaper. So, over the next six months, invest some time in your campaign performance. Follow these steps consistently and turn your SEM campaign into a long term sales engine!
Insert your tracking code
If you havent already inserted a conversion tracking code in the trial period, now is the time to insert it! Decide what you want people to ultimately do on your site i.e. purchase online, enquire or sign up and then place the code behind this goal HTML page. The code will then track exactly how many purchases, enquiries or sign ups occurred as a result of your SEM campaign. You can then filter these results to see which keywords and text ads convert for you and really generate sales.
Use analytics and reporting tools
Google offers an analytics tool which allows users to learn more about who their visitors are, where they come from and how they interact on your site. The analytics function gives statistics on not only your SEM campaigns but other marketing initiatives as well so you can compare what is working for you. Other search engines also offer reporting tools which return important data on the effectiveness of your text ads and keywords. Regularly running these reporting tools will enable you to write better text ads and strengthen your marketing activities.
Pause ineffective keywords
Three months into the campaign, you should analyze the performance of you various key words and pause words which are not performing in regards to clicks and conversion data. We have clients who run their entire campaign with 10 key words only. These golden nugget words generate significant amounts of new client leads and/or online sales for them. Pausing ineffective words will enable you to allocate your budget more effectively to better performing words.
Amend text ads for relevancy
Relevancy is a big thing in search engine marketing. There is nothing worse than seeing an ad that does not speak to the end consumer. For example: a business that is advertising their services in purely functional terms will run the risk of performing poorly, simply due to inappropriate copy writing for the web. If copy writing isnt your strength outsource this part of your campaign to a specialist. It can make a world of difference to your campaign performance and in the end to your sales.
Also, amend text ads for location and keyword relevancy. Putting the suburb in the title will help deter wasteful clicks and save budget. For example: if a user is searching for a service in Cronulla and your ad shows with Sydney CBD in the title, they are less likely to click on it as it is not relevant to them. This increases your click through rate and saves the budget for people that are looking for products or services in your location.
Bidding strategy
Imagine the search engine market as something like the stock exchange. Competitors are constantly entering and exiting the market, driving the market price for popular key words up and sometimes down. If you dont consistently monitor and amend your bids you will soon find yourself on page three of the sponsored links. Coupled with the so-called quality score for your text ads, search engines pretty much place the highest bidder for a particular keyword on position one. Understandably, this is where everyone wants to be because you will get the most traffic to your website. However, you have to remember that just like the stock exchange there are small and large players in SEM. Some companies have a lot of budget to spend when you may not. Be smart with your bidding! Dont bid $10 on one word when you only have a daily budget of $30. In this case you should either reconsider your budget or look for another, more cost-effective type of marketing for your business.
Monitor best click days
After running your campaign for at least four months, you will begin to see clear trends in click patterns. Determine the days in which your campaign receives the most clicks as well as conversions. After four months, many of my clients move the budget from the least performing days and shift it to the best performing days only. Start off by eliminating one day and then over time you can refine your campaign in a way that will enable you to forecast results.
The one thing I have learnt about search engine marketing is that its not rocket science. However, it is time consuming and it needs 100% dedication. You need to allocate at least 3-4 hours per week to refine and analyze your campaign to make it work for you. Understandably, for anybody trying to run a business, 3-5 hours a week is a big ask especially when business is booming from the SEM campaign. If you cannot dedicate this time away from your business, sometimes it is best to enlist the help of a good agency or dedicated professional. That way, you can focus on your core business and let the experts do what they are best at generating leads and sales for you.
